Starting this Blur song inventory of sorts has made me realize a few things about myself. Mainly, that I'm a bit of a gloom-monger...
1992 yet again falls into that heavily distorted, droney category that I seem to come back to. I think I've grown into these songs as I've aged, pushing aside the more obvious favorites for ones like this.
1992 was on 13, a very experimental album, and the one where Blur totally threw out the old Britpop mantle. A great example of the band's willingness to embrace new sounds and innovate, at the risk of alienating fans of their earlier sound. It certainly pays off when you can do it right, and Damon has proven he's the master.
This is a favorite of mine...possibly putting me at odds with many a Blur fan. I like the simplicity, and the noises, and the intentional cacophony of this entire album. It might seem overdone, and a bit of a re-tread (Damon obviously draws heavily from Syd Barrett here), but the thing that I love about it is that obviously Damon has come to this on his own. It's his own personal evolution that brought him to this point, not the desire to copy someone else. One almost believes that he would have got here even if he had lived in a vacuum.
He seems to "discover" methods that have been used many times before, but in finding them himself, is able to inject something totally unique.
