This week's DaMonday entry is a curious tale of a mystery song. This YouTube vid shows the video of Blur's "On Your Own", with the song "Hippy Children". Now I've heard this before somewhere but I can't pinpoint where. Apparently it's a really early Damon song (circa 1987), and it's what garnered Damon and co. their record deal with Food Records (part of Parlophone, part of EMI, ran by God..) It's obviously super 80's, check out Damon's out of control falsetto, and those brilliant synths. I don't remember hearing that THIS is what got Blur (Seymour at the time) their record deal, I think the official story is Dave Balfe going to see one of their early gigs and getting beat up or something. Anyway, just revel in the gloriousness that is "Hippy Children". I swear this was actually released or something as a jokey b-side or fanclub song by Blur, I can't think where else I would have heard it, unless it was back in those mythical napster days. It was available for download by some mercurial Scottish person who claimed to have all of Blur's original demos and Damon's early work. He got shut down by Damon's lawyers, but I wonder if that's where those Parklife demos came from too?

On another note, the "On your own" video always makes me cringe, it was when Damon was going through his dressing like LL Cool J/ skateboarder days. Get that bleeding Kangol hat off Damon, get it right off now! I'd be down in that hole too if I was Dave.
