My Booky Wook

I'm currently reading Russell Brand's autobiography, "My Booky Wook". I just got it today off of Amazon and so far it's a pretty good read. It's not a comedy book per se, but is funny by default because of Russell's life and writing approach. I first heard about Russell about a year and a half ago as I was casually perusing the iTunes podcast directory for stuff to listen to. His podcast originally was taken from his Radio 6 show, but his show has since moved to Radio 2, and a bigger audience. He's since been the host on Britain's Big Brother, had several of his own shows, done two big standup tours of Britain, hosted the Brit Awards, and will be seen in the upcoming Judd Apatow movie "Forgetting Sarah Marshall". So yeah, he's gone big. I'm not entirely sold on his hosting and standup gigs, something about his humor seems better suited to the radio show, which consists of just Russell and his friend (and writing partner) Matt Morgan chatting about stuff. Russell and Matt seem to have a fascination with childhood, and they are always referencing things from when they were growing up. Myself, growing up in Britain around the same time as they did, I feel a peculiar sentimentality listening to their Saturday night chats. Oh, they're talking about Moomin's, I loved them when I was growing up!.....Oh my god I always wanted to be on Record Breakers with Roy Castle too!.....The "I'd rather have a bowl of cocoa pops" song is the screensaver in my brain!....Russell, You are the goth-Timmy Mallet...etc. etc. Russell and Matt even talked about Sylvanian Families once, which you can read more about in my Cornelius on Yo Gabba Gabba post. I suppose the fondness I have for the podcast/ radio show wouldn't be reflected if, for instance, you didn't grow up in Britain in the 80's. However, they do talk about plenty of things that I have no personal reference for (being a sex, and heroin addict..) and I still think it's hilarious.
So far the book seems like it's for serious Russell Brand fans only. His writing is a bit self indulgent for the casual fan...if you want to experience a Russell that everyone can enjoy, listen to his radio 2 show HERE.
